Inspired by the recent release of Pixel Dungeon to the Google Play Store, Wayne delivered a history lesson on Roguelike games. Focusing mostly on the legendary Nethack, we discussed the appeal of these graphically simple, but incredibly complex games with steep learning curves. What seems to have kept a game like Nethack relevant after all these years is the level of satisfaction you feel as a player as you increase your personal knowledge base and learn to apply that knowledge to your decision making each time you start a new dungeon descent. Nethack is a not a game that very many people can beat (or even get very far in), but it is the intrigue of facing the unknown and not the prospect of victory that keeps people coming back to the game time and again. Check out the embedded video for a quick survey of the Rouglike landscape.

After playing around with it for a little while we agreed that while we can’t imagine Roll20 replacing the experience of sitting around a table with friends and beers on a Saturday night, it certainly does present an incredibly robust interface that would allow even the most neophyte dungeon master to conjure up an interesting campaign for their friends.

This week Matt showed off his Makey Makey, an invention kit that allows you to turn almost any object into a control surface. Have you ever wanted to use a bunch of bananas as a keyboard? Makey Makey lets you do that. One of the beautiful things about this product is how simple it is to use. It is intended for use by children, and we are fans of anything that gets kids thinking and creating. We connected it to some tinfoil pads and used them to play a sweet monster truck web game.

On Thursday, September 27th, Evan and Victoria will be presenting at the Academy of the Impossible. This presentation & roundtable discussion begins with a case study of ‘The Order of Good Cheer’ as an interactive theatre experience and looks at the emerging trend of combining technology, fiction and reality. The discussion will set the stage with some international examples and drift into an open discussion about the business models that drive these projects. Stitch Media’s team has created interactive experiences for clients such as FOX, Disney, CBC, Showcase, The Movie Network and consulted on others for the Smithsonian and National Parks. This conversation will be facilitated by the Stitch Media partners to rapidly prototype concepts in this field, test assumptions and discuss how hyper-local interactive theatre shifts production techniques from mainstream media.

In the weeks of July, our Stitch Media Team is busy plotting the city of Toronto and planting clues as we prepare for FestQuest, a scavenger hunt that traditionally wraps the end of the ARGFEST-O-CON event. We can’t reveal much yet, but we can say that it will be a fun-filled day with a final wrap party you don’t want to miss! Oh – and have we mentioned that our Creative Director, Evan Jones, not only architect this game but is planning to drop a clue at the Keynote Address during the conference?!

ARGFest-o-Con – the annual conference/festival comprised of presentations, panels and special events showcasing the best in Alternate Reality Gaming (ARG), transmedia entertainment and serious games – is coming to Toronto, Ontario from July 26-28. ARGFest-o-Con is designed to appeal to both new and seasoned players, professionals & innovators in the field, and students alike. MovieViral.com has described ARGFest-o-Con as “the most interactive conference out there… think of it as a form of Comic-Con before Hollywood fell in love with it.” ARGFest-o-Con 2012 is the eleventh event of its kind in the last ten years. It started as a small social gathering in 2003, and has grown to include panels and presentations from some of the brightest minds in transmedia entertainment and gaming.
